There are precautions that need to be taken to view the eclipse safely. You should never look directly at the eclipse with the naked eye. You should use a pair of solar viewing glasses that are specially made to protect your eyes. Be very careful about using appropriate glasses, do not use sunglasses, 3D glasses, or sunglasses that do not have safety ratings. NASA provides a list of reputable vendors of solar filters and viewers.
For some, people are concerned about having their child experience this event. But know that there are many really cool activities you can do with your child that do not involve looking at the sun directly!
